Seal performance test of tamper-evident closures has a great significance to quality control of packaging materials and beverages. There are also some international standards describes the test methods of gross leak or tightness of closures, including DIN EN 12377:1998 Packaging – Flexible tubes – Test method for the tightness of closures, D5094-90 Standard Test Methods for Gross Leakage of Liquids from Containers with Threaded or Lug-Style Closures. And GB/T 17876-2010 also includes the test method of seal performance of Tamper-evident Closures.

For closures of non-carbonated drinks, firstly, it should be screwed with cap screwing machine with rated torque. Then use leak tester, pressurize to 200kPa and hold for 1 minute under water, and observe leakage. Then pressurize to 350kPa and hold 1 minute. Observe whether the closure becomes loose and falls off. The standard for seal performance of the bottle is no leakage at 200kPa and no falling-off of closure at 350kPa.

For closure for carbonated drinks, it should be screwed with cap screwing machine with rated torque. Then cut the pull ring and perform seal performance test with leak tester. Pressurize to 690kPa, hold for 1 minute and observe leakage. Then pressurize to 1207kPa and hold for 1 minute. Observe whether the closure becomes loose and falls off. The standard for seal performance of the bottle is no leakage at 690kPa and no falling-off of closure at 1207kPa.

Here is an operation video for you. The professional engineer from Labthink will show you how to test the seal performance of tamper-evident plastic closures step by step.

The Equipment used in this test is Labthink’s LSSD-01 Leak and Seal Strength Detector and LSSD-01C Test Device. It has two options for 28mm and 38mm thread closures. Of course, Customization is available for other special sizes.

LSSD-01 Leak and Seal Strength Detector is professionally applicable to the quantitative determination of seal performance, seal quality, burst pressure, compression resistance, torsion force and joint/disengaging force of flexible packages, aseptic packages, various tamper-evident plastic closures, flexible tubes, caps and other materials.

Labthink Instruments Co., Ltd, is always dedicated to providing customers with packaging testing solutions and helping the manufacturers fulfill the goals of quality and safety assurance, through improvement of packaging testing techniques and development of high-end packaging testing instruments.
