There more and more need to measure the permeability properties of coated paper and paperboard. Labthink, 30-year experiences in packaging testing industries, have a series instruments to measure the oxygen-gases and water vapor transmission rate for high and middle barrier coated paper and paperboard.

As we know, the E.U. voted to ban the single-use plastics by 2021. Actually, not only EU Parliament, many countries and cities in the world have banned or are going to ban the single-use plastics, such as Kenya, Canada, Australia, Morocco, New Year, and etc.

More and more printers and converters are responding to requests for paper and paperboard coatings that can replace petroleum based extrusion coated polyethylene (PE) or Poly Replacement. Poly (PE) coated paperboard and paper is considered to be “bullet proof” by many offering an over-kill in terms of barrier performance. These substrates are generally not subjected to barrier testing by printers or converters and can degrades quickly when they are dumped into landfills, while the PE portion is estimated to take decades to breakdown.

Oxygen-gases permeability test

Labthink VAC series gas permeability testers has wide range of 0.05~50,000 cm3/m2?24h?0.1MPa, which can be suitable for low, middle and high barrier materials. The method used is differential pressure methods, based on ASTM D1434.

The pre-conditioned specimen is mounted in the gas diffusion cell as to form a sealed barrier between two chambers. The lower-pressure chamber is firstly evacuated, followed by the evacuation of the entire cell. A flow of gas is thereafter introduced into the evacuated higher-pressure chamber and a constant pressure difference is generated between two chambers. The gas permeates through the specimen from the higher pressure side into the lower side. The gas permeability and other barrier properties of the specimen can be obtained by monitoring the pressure changes in the lower chamber


Water Vapor Permeability Test

The commonly used method for water vapor permeability test is ASTM E96 cup method. Labthink cup method water vapor transmission rate testers are equipped with high resolution sensor, whose test resolution is 0.0001g; the sensor also provides excellent test sensitivity.

Under a certain test temperature, a constant humidity difference is generated between two sides of the test specimen. The water vapor permeates through the specimen and into the dry side. By measuring the weight changes of the test dish in different time, water vapor transmission rate and other parameters can be obtained.
